Getting A Replacement Car Title In Michigan

If you have lost or misplaced your car title, you will need to get a replacement. If you are in the state of Michigan, there are 2 ways that you can do this. The first will be at the Secretary of State local offices and the second is online.

At A Secretary Of State Office

Submitting a replacement title application at a Secretary of State local office is one of the methods that you can use. You will need to complete the application and the owner on the title record will need to sign the application. This person will also need to appear at the office and provide some form of identification. If the owner is unable to go to the office, they can sign an Appointment of Agent form which allows another person to sign on their behalf.

If you are replacing the title of a car with joint ownership, only one of the owners will have to appear at the office. The Appointment of Agent form will not be required from the other owner. The owner that does appear will need to provide identification.

After submitting your application, the replacement title will be sent via mail. This will generally take 14 days to arrive, but if you require this sooner an instant title service is available. For this service, the owner of the vehicle will need to be in the office and an Appointment of Agent form will not be accepted. The instant title service will carry a charge of $5 over and above the $15 fee for the replacement title.

Applying Online

It is also possible to request a replacement title through the ExpressSOS service online. The cost of using the online portal will be the same as going to the Secretary of State office. However, when using the online portal, the owner listed on the title document is the one that it will be issued to. When using the online service, you will generally not be able to get the instant service.

It is also important to note that if you have changed your address with the Secretary of State office in the past 10 days, you will not be able to use the online service. You will also not be able to use this service if you have a power of attorney designation or an appointment of agent. In these situations, you will have to visit the Secretary of State local office to get a replacement title.

There are 2 ways that you can get a replacement car title in the state of Michigan and you need to know which one suits your needs. Most people will choose the online option as this is easier and can be utilized from their home. However, this option does not provide the instant service that many people need and you will have to wait for 14 days to get the replacement title. It is also important to note that your situation might be different and if you think it might be you should contact the Secretary of State local office before you apply.
